If you’re a lover of wildlife and the great outdoors, an exceptional experience awaits you at the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.
LBL is an area of outstanding natural beauty spreading over thousands of acres of forested peaks, parkland and shoreline between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, just south of Padacuh KY. The land is given over to outdoor pursuits with a conservationist and educational theme in breathtaking scenery. One of the attractions offering fun for the whole family and for all ages, is the wildlife and at LBL you connect with nature and the environment with some unique experiences.
LBL’s wildlife themed activities are based around the Woodlands Nature Station which you’ll find north of The Golden Pond Visitor Center. The station is open daily April 1 to October 31, 09:00-17:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00-17:00 on Sundays, and during March and November it is open the same hours but Wednesday through Sunday. Under 4 go free but admission prices for ages 5-12 are $2 and for 13+, $4.
The LBL Woodlands Nature Station offers wildlife encounters indoors in the Discovery Center or outdoors in The Backyard exhibits or see animals and plants in their natural habitats on numerous trails, including one that is wheelchair friendly. In The Backyard you’ll find European fallow deer, bald eagle, great horned owl, bobcat and the extremely endangered Red Wolf. Relish a real encounter with the animals by joining in at feeding time or attend a session on how the animals communicate.
Join in a guided hiking trip or canoe excursion or make acquaintance with nature at your leisure. LBL’s organised tours start at Woodlands Nature Station and you can choose from viewing and tracking, photography and wetland discovery. Water lovers can paddle canoes on Honker Lake amid Blue Herons and Canada Geese whilst mountain bikers can hire bikes at Hillman Ferry Campground and follow trails through woodlands, wetlands and meadows to find fallow deer, white-tails, wild turkey and hawks.
