The Homeplace 1850s Working Farm at Land Between the Lakes

The Homeplace is not a row of artifacts behind glass. It is a working landscape of log buildings, gardens, livestock and daily chores, set in a quiet Tennessee hollow along Woodlands Trace. Costumed interpreters use the farm to show how two generations of a rural family might have lived and worked in the mid-19th century.

Best for: families, history, traditional crafts and a slower half-day stop
Location: 4512 The Trace, Dover, Tennessee
Allow: about 90 minutes to two hours for an unhurried visit
Pair it with: South Bison Range, Piney Campground, Dover or Fort Donelson

What you will see

The farm includes original period buildings arranged around fields, gardens and work spaces. Depending on the day and season, interpreters may be tending animals, cooking, gardening, spinning, working with tools or explaining the small decisions that shaped farm life. The experience changes with the agricultural calendar, which is part of its appeal.

Look beyond the headline demonstrations. The tool barn, household spaces, heirloom crops and heritage livestock reveal how much labor went into an ordinary day before modern utilities and machinery. Children often connect with the animals and hands-on interpretation; adults tend to linger over the buildings and practical details.

How to plan the stop

  • Wear shoes suited to grass, dirt paths and uneven historic surfaces.
  • Give yourself time to talk with the interpreters; conversation is where much of the place comes alive.
  • Bring water in warm weather and expect limited shade between some buildings.
  • Check the day’s program calendar before driving down. Seasonal demonstrations and special events can change the experience substantially.
  • Confirm current hours and admission directly with the official site, especially outside the main season.

Make it part of a southern LBL day

The Homeplace sits on the southern half of Woodlands Trace, across from the South Bison Range. A rewarding route is to begin at the South Welcome Station, spend the late morning at the farm, continue north for a picnic or short trail, and finish with wildlife viewing when the light softens. Travelers staying near Dover can also combine the visit with Dover and Fort Donelson.
