A good example of a Kentuckian artisan vineyard is Ruby Moon Vineyard & Winery which is located in the farmlands of the Audubon region, just south of Henderson. What started as a small dream of Jamie Like and Anita Frazer has today developed into a great example of The Land Between The Lakes agritourism. On an 8 acre site, a vineyard and winery produces hand crafted wines that can be purchased on site from the gift shop.
Vines were first planted at Ruby Moon Vineyard and Winery in October 2003 with grapes from French American Hybrids and American varieties covering ~5.9 acres. Two acres were later added and today the grapes harvested at Ruby Moon are Niagara, Foch, Seyval, Chambourcin, Traiminette, Concord, Stueben and Vignoles.
Incorporation began in 2004 and Ruby Moon Vineyard & Winery became licensed in the summer of 2006. Business proper began when the winery/tasting room and gift shop opened its doors to the public November 11 2006. The menu of Ruby Moon wines includes wines from estate grapes Audubon Red, Seyval Blanc and Marechal Foch and a selection of fruit wines made from estate grapes and locally grown fruits including strawberry, peach and blueberries. The excellence of the wines was recognized at the Kentucky State Fair where a total of 5 medals were awarded: 2 bronze, 2 silver and gold for the Razzle Dazzle Raspberry.
In keeping with the attraction of tourists to the area, The Ruby Moon Vineyard runs tasting sessions in a Tuscan inspired room. You can sample the wines with cheese and crackers before visiting the gift shop to purchase your favorites. The shop also sells the cheeses that you’ve sampled and these are handmade Kentucky gourmet varieties in 8 oz blocks. The shop also sells home wine making (and beer) kits if you fancy dabbling at home. The Tasting room is available at public hours or for private party bookings. Check the website for details.
