Out of a necessity to find an alternative to the traditional tobacco crops, Kentucky farmers have turned to agritourism. The Land Between The Lakes National Recreational Area, a major tourist destination in Western Kentucky, has seen a surge in visitors. This increase in tourism, driven by the stunning scenery and diverse activities, has led many working farms to open their doors to the public. One notable trend is the conversion of tobacco fields to grapevines, transforming these farms into vibrant vineyards that attract wine enthusiasts from near and far.
If you fancy yourself a wine connoisseur, are a novice wine drinker eager to learn, or simply enjoy a glass or two at dinner, a trip to an LBL vineyard is a must. Visiting a Kentucky vineyard isn’t just about tasting a few wines and buying a couple of bottles. It’s an immersive experience perfect for adults, offering unique attractions at each location.
Kentucky wines range from white to red, dry to sweet, and even include a variety of fruit wines made from locally grown produce. The winemakers often pair their tastings with local cheeses and other farm goodies. You might find yourself in a room echoing a Tuscan farm kitchen or a chateau wine cellar, or perhaps you’ll attend a festive vineyard event with food and live country music.
After tastings, you can buy your favorite wines from the gift shop, along with fresh goods and wine-related items like glasses and home-making kits. Cheers to that!
Purple Toad Winery is located at 4275 Old US Highway 45 in Paducah, Kentucky. Owned by Allen and June Dossey, this is Paducah’s only commercial winery and a true tourist hub. Unlike many small artisan wineries, Purple Toad wines are available at liquor retailers throughout Western Kentucky. However, visiting the winery for a tasting and choosing your wines in person is an experience not to be missed.
Bravard Vineyards and Winery is located at 15000 Overton Drive, about 17 miles northeast of Hopkinsville in Christian County. Run by Jim and Jan Bravard, this vineyard offers tastings every Saturday between 10 AM and 5 PM. The Bravard family has been cultivating grapes since 1985, and today, their vineyard produces six types of wine from 6.5 acres of French-American hybrid and pure American grape varieties.
Eddy Grove Vineyard is another notable vineyard in the area, though it is currently closed until further notice. Keep an eye on this vineyard for future tastings and events once it reopens.
While exploring the vineyards, don’t miss other attractions around the Land Between The Lakes. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of options, including hiking trails, golf courses, and historic sites.
For dining options, consider visiting The Brass Lantern in Aurora or The Joint BBQ Wings & More in Eddyville. Each offers a unique dining experience that complements your vineyard tour.
