For a fascinating trip with a difference, Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory at The land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers an interesting journey into the world of astronomy in gorgeous surroundings. The Planetarium complex sits in a scenic parkland that is an area of true outstanding natural beauty and because LBL has a commitment to bringing the history, science and the environment to life, there are many attractions for energetic visitors and bookish types alike. The Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory which is operated by the Friends of LBL is one of the more diverting entertainments LBL offers.
The Planetarium, which has been recently recognized by NASA for contribution to public Space education, is an integral part of the Golden Pond Visitor Center with the Observatory at its rear. The visitor center is located centrally in LBL, where The Trace and Highway 68/80 meet. It offers a fascinating day out and even if you thought you had no interest in astronomy, after a visit to Golden Pond Planetarium you’ll be a converted Stargazer.
The Planetarium and Observatory season runs most days March 1 through December 20 between the hours of 9-5 but is closed for Thanksgiving. Check the website for opening times and a list of activities. There are a selection of scheduled shows, both day time and night time and whilst there’s no charge to look through the telescopes in the Observatory, there are small entrance fees for the Planetarium shows, with ticket prices for adults $4, youths $2 (under 4 go free) and an added premium for night shows.
A trip to LBL Planetarium is a wonderful world of discovery where you can explore astral phenomena like the exotically titled white dwarves and black holes and you can learn to distinguish between the constellations on a night sky that is simulated on a 40 foot dome or observe the stars through one of 4 telescopes and inspect solar flares through a Hydrogen-Alpha refactor.
This is one attraction of LBL that you’ll leave with stars in your eyes.
The Golden Pond Planetarium is located inside the Golden Pond Visitors Center. The Visitor Center is located in the center of LBL.
